2. Really needed that extra hour of sleep.

4. Queenie. I start to judge my emotional reactions and then remember that good art makes you feel, that engaging with any artistic work is going to elicit a response.

5. They say that the goats are loud. They are. This is a whiny bunch.

6. I shouldn’t be cold but I grab a blanket and throw it over my legs, and then my arms.

3. I go a little further on the trail this time, climb more and more of the dirt stairs cut into the hillside. The views from here are worth the extra effort. I’m still too afraid to walk the whole loop alone.

6. She reminds me that we’re supposed to be reading the book about rest, which is ironic because right now, I am trying to rest and feeling guilty about it.

6. Fried chicken and cornbread. They say it’s good, but Popeye’s is just as good and cheaper. “I’m not driving to Vallejo for fried chicken.”

1. Not sure why I even bought pants. I never want to wear them.

4. I look through the stack of books and pick the thinnest one. Just a few pages before I must go.

6. She says it’s been slow—scary slow. I can feel it. Plenty of cars passing through, but there are no people on the street. Everyone knows there is a problem. No one seems to be able to fix it.

5. One by one they begin to cancel. I should just do all of this from home then.

7. I tell her that I need until September to be in full-court shape. Note to self: get in full-court shape.

1. Did not expect the gray sky.

1. Too warm.

2. This feeling feels familiar.

4. I forgot to water the plants again.

8. A much-needed distraction.

9. He asks us about open gym. She says it looks like I missed it. She’s right. I forgot how much I enjoy being there. I just needed to laugh.

Ten.Two Thousand, Two Hundred & Nine

1. Quiet.

2. I make sure to get the cobwebs before I lay on my back again in Savasana.

3. The short walk turns into a longer hike—steps and more steps. On the way back, I pick the most recently liked songs: July, II Most Wanted, Too Sweet, Lose Control. I spot a former colleague in the cart. He tells me he could hear me singing and to keep singing. I walk back home with the water, only a little embarrassed.

6. Even though I get a little nervous with each fall, he clearly feels so much better. You can tell by how he is playing. He looks happy.

1. Day 1.

2. I gaze across the valley and set my eyes on the eastern ridge. I wish someone would just cut down those tall skeletal trees, those ghostly remains.

3. “This won’t last forever, but it’s wonderful while it’s happening.”

4. I look at my watch and realize it’s already after 9 o’clock. I am late.

5. I tell her that no, I have not yet found my Julie or Gracie or Cynthia.

6. He looks normal. Better than normal?

7. He introduces himself and says they will be coming to all of the games. That makes my heart happy.

8. A basket full of marinated meats and a block of maple walnut fudge.

9. He reminds me that it’s still early in the 5-year plan. All good things take time.

10. It’s still 94 degrees outside.

Ten.Two Thousand, Two Hundred & Seven

1. This low fog is a gift before the heat dumps in.

2. You don’t have to force it.

3. Both things can be true at once.

4. They sit down to eat bagels with cream cheese and watch X-Files.

5. These potatoes are really good: seasoned, and soft, and crunchy.

6. I forget that the bottle is sitting there and accidentally knock it off the chair. Green glass everywhere. The last little sludge of wine is deep, almost black against the dark slate tile.

7. No shade. The fronts of my legs are burning. I should have worn shorts. Maybe.

8. A few things about this: 1. These opponents are notorious for their poor sportsmanship. 2. It’s hot and that means it’s anger is easier to access.

9. But I would have wanted to punch him, too.

1. I miss those gladiolas.

2. The words, “you’re right,” escape from between my lips. But he is. Probably.

3. My body is not listening to my mind. My feet keep walking toward the coffee machine even though I know I shouldn’t have anymore.

1. The weird thing about summer is sometimes not knowing what day it is.

4. We laugh about Crocs and how awful they were when they originally came out. And how it’s so uncool to wear socks with them.

6. She tells me that she thinks I can do it. I almost start to say something about how many signs I’m being given from the universe.

1. The color of the sky.

2. Bits of ash fall onto the windshield. He asks if it’s pollen. No. It’s from the fires.

3. I can see for myself how much greater the range of motion is in his hip. It wasn’t all for nothing. He calls someone as soon as we walk out of the hospital.

4. That feeling when you take the time to learn a new tool and then implement that tool successfully, only to know that you are the only person in the company who will probably ever use it because user adoption in traditional business settings is always so slow.

4. Buster’s BBQ. Charles is sitting outside like always. Three-rib plate with a double side of baked beans. Shaded picnic table.

5. A little bit of wine with an ice cube. I lean against the railing and look through the trees

6. She seems to be really stuck on the fact that she called her “elitist.” “It’s not like I ordered a steak dinner.”

7. This summer is going to be different.

8. The sound of the wind through the trees.

10. This persisting feeling that something else needs to change.

Ten.Two Thousand, Two Hundred & One

1. Four missed calls at 5:30 a.m.

2. I cancel our practice—again. I could have really used it.

3. It could have been worse.

4. I will get those webs down somehow, at some point.

5. It only took me until the last two weeks of the session to be ahead on my reading.

6. If he were home, I would have called him for coffee and a chat.

7. A block of maple walnut fudge. Slice by slice. That kind of day.

Ten.Two Thousand, Two Hundred

1. Not enough sleep.

2. Another cool, gray morning. A sweater over the tank top.

3. Some of these plants are, dare I say, thriving.

4. 85%. But what about the other 15%?

5. I gotta stop watching this.

6. Forks up.

7. Life’s problems don’t change, but sometimes they are easier to deal with in 80 degrees, sunshine, and an hour’s drive from the beach.

8. She asks us if we work together. We say we used to. We’re not far, but no longer as close. Picpoul, tartare, salmon, grilled bundt cake.

9. The back deck is shaded. I am tired. I try to read but I can’t keep my eyes open. I close them. The birds are chatty this afternoon. There is a gentle breeze. I had forgotten how much I love these kind of summer afternoons.

10. She comes back tonight.

Ten.Two Thousand, One Hundred & Ninety-Nine

1. The gray skies are comforting.

2. No more peanut butter and chocolate protein shakes. No more avocados. I settle for oatmeal with dried cherries.

3. She says they’re at the capital today. That Trump is supposed to be there.

4. If I don’t dance at my desk, I will fall asleep.

5. “Just bored,” I say. “Just bored.”

6. Something about all of this feels kind of silly to me. But it’s beeter than what I dealt with before.

7. Parking lot conversations. It’s cooler than I thought it would be. Sour Cream and Onion chips.

8. A kick of wind and a broken glass.

9. Glowing gladiolas.
