1. The way the sun is pushing through the clouds and the fog.

2. All of the sweatshirts are gone. Just gone. Hundreds of dollars of clothing lost within the last handful of months. He will just be cold today.

3. “It’s been impactful,” she says. I tell her that’s a nice way of putting it.

4. Sometimes the energies just don’t vibe, and that’s okay.

5. I know where I need to go to get the answers, but I know that I will not get the answers I want in time.

6. Sunshine.

7. By the numbers.

8. I almost slip on the carpet as I try to sneak into the room. I find my way to the corner of the room and lean against a large wooden beam to listen to them speak. For all of the other things one must put up with, at least there are moments like these from which I can feed some hunger.

1. Is it the melatonin?

2. Half of a cinnamon bun.

3. Sometimes the energy is off, and it’s just off, and there’s nothing else you can do to change it.

5. They always say if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all. I’m not saying anything.

6. It is normally a quick lunch, but today it is a long lunch. It is busy. Busier than they intended, which is hopefully a good thing.

7. I don’t recognize this face. I ask him how long he’s been here. Only two weeks. I feel less guilty. He has the right vocabulary and tone for this job, which is a weird thing to think.

1. Bacon and hashbrowns but rummaging through the fridge for something that isn’t that.

3. The emails are fast and furious already. What is actually a priority?

4. But really, what would I do without her every day?

5. Next year, we should do a bracket for women’s teams.

6. It’s just too…white.

7. Where’s my Yeti?

8. So much can be understood through tone. I don’t need to see their face or read their words. Just need to listen to how they are saying what they are saying.

9. He did it. He got it done. He’s playing. He hates batting 9th. We watch him get a single and then run home on the next batter’s triple. He will be fine.

10. I tell him the truth: I felt jealous and sad. And that’s honest and real, and it feels good to say the truth out loud.

Ten.One Thousand, Five Hundred & Fifty-Eight

1. Darn it. This was supposed to be a late morning.

2. I embrace the early wake-up and decide to lay in bed and watch the light filter in.

3. Nothing for breakfast.

4. Bathrooms cleaned. Floors mopped. Carpets vacuumed. Incense burning.

5. Raccoon.

6. The sun is out, but there is still a chill in the air. I lean back into my stadium seat and stare out across the horizon.

7. Yikes. 23-11.

8. We decide to make our own Sommer Spring Award: whoever has the best batting average wins.

9. The thing is, he is doing all of his work, so I guess it will be worth it.

10. Focus on Purpose.

Ten.One Thousand, Nine Hundred & Fifty-Seven

1. The morning arrived so quickly.

2. We are there, on time, and it feels a little bit like a miracle.

3. Opening day. Bright, clear morning. Energy. Two kids walk toward the home plate and sit to play the cello.

4. She mentions anticipatory sadness, and I know that feeling far too frequently.

5. She puts on 90s rap playlist. Songs I haven’t heard in a decade or more, and yet the lyrics are still embedded in my brain.

6. I think about how familiar this road is to me now. With the familiar, there is no fear.

7. A la Heart Cafe. Ceaser salad with chicken. Black cherry kombucha. Three cookbooks. I blame it on the sun.

8. The girls want to see on playing. I want to keep the light on my face.

9. Just calm down.

10. Maybe it is time for a break. Time to rest and repair. Acknowledge the loss and approach it with care.

1. In the dream, the monster is on one side of the girl, and I am on the other. The more and more I try to make the monster leave, the more he digs in his claws. I am terrified. The girl’s cries are louder and louder.

2. I turn over and see that is only 1 a.m. which is both a relief and a burden. I don’t want to go back to that dream.

3. I scribble into my journal. Three pages fill up quicky. I find the glue sticks and scissors and grab a stack of magazines. I glue the last few words before dashing out the door for work.

4. Let’s make this a fun Friday.

5. I feel my heels sticking to the mud as we walk between the vines. Not the worst shoe to wear, but not the best. Some of the bird boxes are crooked.

6. We eat inside the greenhouse. Steak frites and lemonade for me.

7. Fresh air and a walk that is also work.

8. Sun on my face. Blinding. I don’t mid. It’s taking the chill off.

9. I stare out across the horizon at the green hills, the blue sky, trees.

1. In the dream, he is telling her that it’s done, and we aren’t even halfway through the year. She asks me for more. I say, “no.”

2. I stop by the office to make myself a decaf before I head down to the warehouse. It is just me and the power washers.

3. I can’t stop myself from thinking. “Too much time in the car,” I say to myself. I turn off the podcast so that the only words I hear are my own.

4. I listen intently to drown out my own thoughts. Cones and shields. Mosel and Alsace.Whites and reds.

5. This feeling is only temporary.

2. Early morning calls. A quick wave of doubt.

3. I get to the office early. It is still raining, and the sky is gray. I set the meditation timer for five minutes.

4. She convinces me that we must keep the meeting.

5. I like this setup better.

6. Leftover tomato soup. I pull the crusts off of the pizza. I eat alone at my desk and read a book while I savor the warmth of the soup.

8. She asks me about my hair, but there is something so genuine and honest about the question that I am not bothered by it. We talk about fires, mudslides, and life in the valley. Also, I should be given a golf cart.

1. The rain is back. I should have listened to him and eaten yesterday’s lunch outside.

3. I make myself a decaf coffee before heading upstairs to prepare for the day. First one in means quiet, and that’s exactly what I need.

4. I tell her later that I realize that I don’t have much of a poker face, and so I’m sure I didn’t look that pleased and man, it really sucks when you can’t hide it. But also, maybe it’s a gift.

5. So much rain.

6. I know exactly why I’ve been put in the middle.

1. In the dream, she is calling me to tell me that people are calling her because we misspelled Giugni’s Deli.

3. I tell her about the dream. She laughs. She’s the only one I know who will get it. She’s the only one who feels more anxious about the emails than I do.

4. Acai bowl; two decaf coffees. A lot of talk about the past, the present, the future. Cool air blowing against the skin.

1. He comes back today, and I am curious about what version of himself he will be upon his return.

2. Gillwood’s. Two egg (scrambled) breakfast with home fries and bacon and wheat toast. Freshly squeezed orange juice. Decaf coffee. Just the three of us.

6. More tea.

7. I immediately question everything I think I am doing, everything I think I know. I start to think that I will never know.

9. He’s talking and talking and talking. This is a good thing.

10. “Regulate” starts to play, and I am instantly transported to a dimly lit fraternity house, red solo cup in hand, friends. I am remembering feeling free in a way that I no longer feel or feel as though I never have the opportunity to feel. This is neither a good nor a bad thing. It just is.

1. No alarm.

2. I was not expecting all of this sunshine. So grateful for all of this sunshine.

3. I don’t think I realized he could/did talk this much. He’s really into classic cars - and Monty Python.

4. He forgot his cleats.

5. She says something about how we are scheduled for 5:30pm and not 11:00am and the handful of us are looking at each other in disbelief.

6. I am surprised by this conversation, but I am grateful for it. I tell her that if she’s doing all of those sports, then why not just add golf?

7. Back home we go. “This is a good day to forget your cleats,” he says.

8. I sit at the stoplight and watch the tourists pile up at the intersections. I remind myself that I live in a place people come for vacation; that is something to be grateful for.

9. “That’s because you don’t have brothers.”

10. Yes. It was still the right choice.

1. No Zero Hour.

2. I remind myself that I’m moving slowly because I only slept for three hours the night before.

3. I feel weird about all this bread being exposed, but I order myself a morning bun anyway.

4. Desk move day.

5. Before I get out of the golf cart, we talk about how hard it is to be a parent.

6. More sun. More sun. More sun.

7. What in the world is happening here?

8. L-shape for the win. I might sit down more now. “Office is looking nice,” he yells down the catwalk.

9. As much of a mess as I thought it would be.

10. “I won't say I'm no better than anybody else, but I'll be danged if I ain't just as good!”

1. He’s not awake yet.

2. I’m not being a jerk. I’m trying to get us all out of the house on time.

3. Long, dark, quiet ride.

4. They stop my bag. I think the hold-up is the bajillion pens and pencils until I remember that my wine key is in the pocket. She says I can check it. I tell her I’m just trying to escort my minor to his gate. I can’t tell if she’s feigning pity.

5. I may regret this decision.

6. A very bad accident.

7. He pushes on bones and muscles and presses on ligaments and joints. I don’t always know what he’s doing, but it feels like magic.

8. Sun, sun, sun.

9. At first, the group is small, but then it grows, one by one by one. I think I count 9 girls. That’s a good little group of incoming freshmen. I get a little excited.

10. But what do we have? Each other.

1. 2-something in the morning. I really need to go to sleep.

2. I really need to go to sleep.

3. Thick, dark clouds. Raindrops clinging to the windows.

4. I listen to the words coming out of his mouth and can do nothing else but lower my gaze. I am almost certain that I am smirking, but there’s nothing I can do to hide it.

5. Turns out there are a lot of things happening soon. Really soon.

6. Screens keep flickering. Power. So much water. And now the wind. Is that one going to fall over? It looks like it could snap any minute.

7. He says that the power is out. What is the backup plan for dinner?

8. I reread the letter. What is it about the letter that is getting to me?

9. Turley Zinfandel while waiting for the burgers. Trying to find the warmest heater under which to stand but we’re getting colder and colder and colder.

10. I tell him not to worry: the three of us are already planning a trip.

11. Still no power. Cords running through the house. Showers in the dark. Wishing I had been hungry enough to eat my burger while it was still warm. It feels like Friday.

Ten.One Thousand, Nine Hundred & Forty-Six

1. That came faster than I thought.

2. I tell him that I want my half-hot-water-half-coffee but that I need to eat breakfast before I do. But I’m not hungry. But I want the half-hot-water-half-coffee. But I’m not hungry.

3. One corner of coffee cake.

4. It’s coming together.

5. Path of least resistance.

6. Trying not to roll my eyes.

7. He tells us about the time he worked at Don Giovanni and how he had an hour-long lunch break and went to the bar and got drunk, but that he went back to work to finish his shift. The managers told him he was drunk, but he told them he was fine. I’m just trying to hide my horror while I fumble with the menu.

8. He tells me that the rain is supposed to come hard and heavy tonight and that he’s going to open the fire road in case the base of the hill floods.

9. Not my problem.

1. Forgot about the time change.

2. Still no yoga for me.

3. I lay in bed a little bit longer, stare out the window into the soft morning light.

4. Long to-dos for a Sunday.

5. Slowly making my way through the piles of things sitting in front of the fireplace.

6. What next?

7. I keep telling myself that I just need to find another way to get everyone else organized, everyone else more self-sufficient, and then things will be easier for me.

8. I set the legos outside on the deck. All but the Mandolorian. I can’t bring myself to give that one away.

9. Exactly how I thought it would be.

10. A second helping of Ceasar Salad before the next speech. The smell of old wood and bad wine and brownies. The anxiety of running across Highway 29 not once, but twice.

1. The rain is back.

2. I try to look for a break in the weather for us to be together. It doesn’t look promising but I hold a time anyway.

3. So, there is a game after all.

4. Ham and cheese quiche from Station. Coffee from home.

5. We both agree that this is the good thing about baseball we love most - time to be with one another.

6. The rain keeps falling and falling and falling.

7. Tomato soup and homemade croutons.

8. I think about her words and realize she is right. She is right. And that means making a different decision.

9. Libraries as a refuge.

1. Forgot to turn off the alarm.

2. It’s not raining. And I think maybe even the sun will come out.

3. I really need to get these computer pieces out of my car.

4. Another day of school drop-off and pick-up, half-water-half-coffee spilling out of the spout of my mug, staring through raindrops on the window.

5. I think I’m closer.

6. We eat in what is in effect a greenhouse. It is surprisingly warm and sunny. Steak frites and lemon meringue pie. I almost lose track of time.

7. I ask her if I can show her my big babies. I show her big babies dancing. “Big babies dancing?”

8. As soon as we start walking through the campus I feel a little bit of nostalgia, maybe even a bit of jealousy. Those unfinished years still haunt me.
